Revitalizacija Pivare Lemp, St. Louis, SAD, 2012

STATUS: Projekat

Lemp Brewery Revitalization, St. Louis, USA, 2012

STATUS: Project

The goal

The project proposed here set out to explore, preserve, renew, and create new city life at an incredible historic site: the Lemp Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri. This brewery sits on 13 acres just a few miles south of downtown St. Louis, and has been in existence since 1865 when the first brew-house was built. The brewer closed when Prohibition came into effect, and was sold to the International Shoe Company, which used it as a shoe factory and owned the site from 1922 to 1980. Since 1980 a number of development projects have been proposed, but none enacted. Over 20 beautiful load-bearing brick buildings still stand on the site, mostly empty, awaiting the economic strength necessary to fund a re-development project. First an urban plan for the site was created, re-using and adding on to buildings as much as possible, and creating new infill designs in the under-utilized areas of the site. Individual buildings were then selected for further architectural development.

Site Location

Lemp Brewery, St. Louis, MO

Project Description

This proposal is an urban redevelopment of the Lemp Brewery complex with the goal of creating a city within a city – a walkable, workable, and livable place with a European-style street life. As such, an attempt was made to incorporate an expansive view of the needs of contemporary life into the programming of the existing and new buildings – work life, home life, social life, and neighborhood life. The project grew under the methodology of Christopher Alexander’s San Francisco design experiment, in which the master plan was developed piece by piece, with an attempt to make each piece a whole entity within the larger entity attempting to be made whole.   Additionally, the Le Corbusier approach of mass, surface, and plan was applied, in that order initially, to create an urban feel that marries the old and new into a harmonious, but not homogeneous, urban streetscape. The buildings presented here are all new construction: mixed use retail and services, and residential flats and studios on the east side of Lemp Avenue that give residents ready access to the street and urban life of Lemp.

ADM Laboratory, Decatur, USA, 2011

STATUS: Project

Program assignment

The focal point of the assignment was to design and analyze a zero energy research laboratory building and a visitor center on an underutilized urban site, focusing on structure, enclosure, technology and performance, with integration of building materials, components and systems and their impact on the design, construction, and sustainability of buildings and architectural environments at a wide range of scales.

The design sought to explore the conditions and potential for an environmentally responsible building design that can make a contribution to urban renewal and redevelopment in or near downtown Decatur, Illinois.

The building itself was to be flexible enough to meet the requirements of a potential change of the program development into a different commercial sector.

Site location

Decatur, Illinois

Site adjacent to the west of the Civic Center

Project description

The building is a sustainable laboratory for experimental and theoretical research with supporting functions. The main mass of the building, the perimeter, houses the visitor center at the ground level, and laboratory spaces, supporting offices, administration and publishing center on the two upper floors. These spaces utilize daylight to the full extent due to the narrow perimeter tract. The central atrium provides its users with quite a different ambient and houses an auditorium, kitchens, dining and relaxation spaces, a library, and introduces a new type of working space for theoretical research – a “garden – library”.

As the existing, remaining buildings on the site already dictated the shape of the urban block with their position, relation to each other and height, the newly proposed building responds accordingly. The overall shape of the building consist of a narrow perimeter mass which wraps around the existing buildings, hiding their unpleasant, unattractive and un-fenestrated rear sides, and a central atrium which serves as the main climate control element and houses various functions of the building. The buildings on the site share the same service and fire access ally.

The main climate control element, the atrium, pre-conditions and refreshes the air due to its plant and water features. The air is then locally distributed to the perimeter functions and is controlled manually, for the purpose of space flexibility. The atrium also stores heat in the high thermal mass of the “garden-library”, heats the water through copper pipes and treats gray water from the building, making it available for reuse.

To further enhance environmentally conscious design, the building responds to site pressures and creates new and attractive spaces with its mass, shape and functional distribution, rather than with its materials and construction methods which are in this case kept as simple as possible. Most of the materials utilized are different recycled materials of the local area.

Ebbw Vale Hospital, Wales, 2012

STATUS: Project

In collaboration with Corina Boeckeler, architect

The goal

The goal was to design a 118 bed hospital in the post industrial city of Ebbw

Vale, Wales. The city suffered from the decline of the steel and coal industries that defined its existence since 1778, and is currently struggling with high unemployment, poverty and high rates of chronic diseases. A massive re-development plan, called “The Works” has been designed for this area. The task was to design a chronic disease hospital situated in this re-development area.

Following questions were addressed: What is a hospital that addresses chronic disease? Is it possible to separate urban planning from hospital design when considering chronic disease?

The program included multiple diagnosis and treatment departments such as surgery, imaging and emergency rooms, an inpatient sector with 118 beds for intensive care, medical/surgical, pediatrics, rehabilitation, mental health and labor and delivery rooms, plus outpatient diagnosis and therapy departments for cardiology, respiratory therapy, renal dialysis, rehabilitation, dental, oncology, women’s health and substance abuse clinics, as well as a medical office building. Administration and public spaces included a retail pharmacy, adult and child day care center, fitness and public education. All the support services, such as laboratory, pharmacy, food service, central sterile supply, central staff support and materials management had to be incorporated as well.

Site Location

Ebbw Vale, Wales, U.K.

Within the re-development plan called ”The Works”

Project Description

The hospital provides chronic disease patients with a healing environment abundant in natural light, views of nature, healing gardens and communal social areas for family and patient support, while healing the entire urban fabric at the same time, by engaging multiple outpatient clinics into the community. To support preventive healthcare, the program was separated into multiple outpatient clinics, each with a front door to the street, in a retail manner. The main hospital contains the major diagnosis, treatment and laboratory departments, in addition to 118 single-patient rooms and nursing units. Multiple buildings insure our hospital’s integration in the surroundings by reverberating with the existing rhythm of facades and local materials. When integration guided the architecture of the street facades, the more private area in the back allowed the development of public gardens, incorporating sculptures and art, imperative for healing.

Patients’ rooms, overlooking these gardens, provide a safe healing environment, with ample natural light, great views and the possibility to open a balcony door for proximity to nature. The balconies are sized to shade the generous glazing. Same handed, standardized patient rooms help reduce staff errors and maximize staff efficiency. Visibility of patient’s head from the corridor and the placement of the sink at the entrance, facing the bed, improve patient’s safety.

The conservatory, placed in between the medical office buildings and the main inbedded care departments, offers a welcoming public entrance for the hospital, providing a public environment full of natural light and greenery, supported by a cafe, retail pharmacy, gift and flower shop. For improved staff efficiency, the medical office buildings are connected with bridges with the inbedded care departments. Furthermore, the conservatory acts like a main living room for the hospital, eliminating the typical waiting rooms, providing even an amphitheater for community events and concerts, as well as a covered street for local users. In addition to its direct relation to the outside public garden, the conservatory connects to a second public garden at the lower level, in the proximity of the dining halls.

To insure ample natural light for the lower level diagnosis and treatment areas and to help with way-finding, the building provides several lower gardens with various privacy offers. There is a large garden in the proximity of dining halls, and two side gardens adjacent to bereavement spaces, close to the intensive care units and the emergency department.

The building provides a supportive environment, patient-centered, providing personal as well as common spaces to insure everybody’s involvement in the healing process, in accordance with the PlainTree model of care. Single loaded corridors provide natural light for staff, helping reduce errors. The visual connection with the conservatory keeps staff in contact with the happenings around, enhancing staff satisfaction.

Program assignment

“Tall buildings are often important landmarks of the city.” This project sought to develop a new high-rise in Chicago’s downtown Streeterville, to augment the quality of the city. The project began with a comprehensive investigation of the site’s context, followed by an in-depth design process. The focus was on determining the best methods of utilizing the building’s mixed use program, while integrating intelligent structural solutions and developing the building’s relationship with its “complex physical context.”

Site location

Chicago, Illinois

Streeterville

Site adjacent to the east of the NBC Tower

Project description

The proposed mixed-use high-rise incorporates two functionally independent volumes, office and residential, connected at various levels of common amenities and shared spaces, reflecting the functional and visual complexity of downtown Chicago.

To respond to the strong Chicago winds, the building is tapered to reduce the vortex shedding, while the open space between the two volumes minimizes the negative pressure created by the wind. The building incorporates a double skin facade with retractable sun-shading devices on the east and west side, in the axis of the dominant winds, maximizing natural ventilation and solar control. The residential tower, placed towards south, shades the north office tower.

Atria alternate east and west on the bottom part of the office, enhancing daylight and natural ventilation of the larger office floors. The upper part introduces sky-gardens as a visual and social focus, offering alternative informal work or break areas and conference rooms. The residential tower is divided into smaller communities by a succession of winter gardens with community rooms.

The tower is anchored in the lower-scale city fabric through a plaza with food court, retail and conference center at the base of the office tower, connected directly to important pedestrian arteries. A lower residential part on the south side of the site responds to the neighboring buildings, enriching the variety of living spaces.

The roof-top restaurant, connected with a roof park, provides the best views of Lake Michigan and downtown Chicago.
